Part Two – Applying the Five Steps of Discernment to Real-Life Health Goals
This is part two of my series on discernment. If you haven’t read part one, The Middle Is the Hardest Place to Be, I encourage you to start there. That post explored the theory of discernment and why living in the middle between extremes, is where transformation happens. This post offers a practical example.
A Practical Example: Navigating a Health Decision
Many people face the challenge of pursuing a health goal when the path forward is unclear. Imagine someone working to lower their cholesterol. There are endless options: diets, exercise routines, supplements, and lifestyle changes. Each claims to offer the perfect solution. But which path is truly right?
This is where discernment becomes essential.
Step 1: Gather Up the Facts
The first step is to collect objective data, run lab tests, monitor trends over time, pay attention to physical symptoms and overall well-being, and avoid making impulsive decisions based on a single result or trend.
Step 2: Pause and Reflect (Pray Over the Facts)
Next, pause. Resist the urge to rush into extreme measures. Instead, reflect and create space for calm contemplation. Ask: What does the data show? What changes feel realistic and sustainable? Where am I tempted to control things too tightly?
Step 3: Search the Movements of the Spirits
Following St. Ignatius and Fr. Iannuzzi’s framework, listen for three inner voices:
-
The divine spirit promotes moderation, patience, and respect for the body as a gift.
-
The human spirit seeks control, perfection, and rapid results.
-
The evil spirit pushes toward obsession, fear, and extreme behaviours.
The goal is to notice these internal influences and gently align with the voice of peace and wisdom.
Step 4: Come to an Internal Decision
Based on facts and prayerful reflection, make a reasonable decision. This may involve adopting a moderate diet, committing to regular but balanced exercise, and setting aside unrealistic expectations.
Step 5: Seek External Confirmation
Finally, consult with trusted professionals, such as health care providers or coaches. Discuss your plan and be open to their insights. Wise counsel can confirm or gently refine your path.
The Takeaway
Discernment in health, as in any area of life, is rarely about finding a perfect formula. It is about moving forward with peace and humility, resisting the pressure to control every detail. It’s about stewardship of your body, guided by gratitude, balance, and trust in the process.
When we apply discernment to our health goals, we can let go of extremes and cultivate calm, sustainable rhythms that promote true well-being.
If you’re facing a difficult decision right now, consider these five steps. They can offer a thoughtful, grounded way to move forward with confidence and serenity.
